Breast-feeding & Chemicals. What's A Mother (& Baby) To Do?

    There are a million and one reasons why breast-feeding a newborn beats formula.  As reported by Pam Belluck writing for the NYTimes, "Hospitals Ditch Formula Samples to Promote Breast-Feeding," it's generally healthiest for mom and baby.  Excerpt.
  

"Breast-feeding decreases babies’ risk of ear infections, diarrhea, asthma and other diseases, and may reduce risk of obesity and slightly improve I.Q., experts say. "

So why send mom home from the hospital after giving birth with some nifty little gift bags packed with sample cans of formula?  Some argue that the samples are too convenient at helping to deter a mother from breast-feeding when she learns how easy it is to just pop the top.  Others argue that babies do just fine on formula.  And still others argue that hospitals should be in the business of health - spelled mother's natural breast milk - and not canned formula.  Excerpt.

 

"The question is whether samples tempt mothers who could breast-feed exclusively for the recommended six months to use formula when they’re exhausted or discouraged if nursing proves difficult. The C.D.C., the World Health Organization and breast-feeding advocates say samples turn hospitals into formula sales agents and imply that hospitals think formula is as healthy as breast-feeding. Health experts warn that even small amounts of formula dilute breast-feeding’s benefits by altering intestinal micro-organisms and decreasing breast milk supply, since women produce less when babies nurse less. They say that while some women face serious breast-feeding challenges, more could nurse longer with greater support, and that formula samples can weaken that support system."

Then ask yourself about the more complex story of toxic chemicals that are passed through breast milk to nursing babies. Chemicals like DDT, PCBs, mercury, lead, benzene, perchlorane, and others.

For that information you will have to turn to Florence Williams' book, Breasts, recently reviewed by Jennifer Browdy de Hernandez for ORION magazine, September/October 2012.  Excerpt:

 

"Yes, human milk is like ice cream, penicillin, and the drug ecstacy all wrapped up in two pretty packages.  But, women "off-load" up to90 percent of their own chemical loads  through their breast milk, prompting Norway, the country with "the single highest breast-feeding rate in the world," to consider recommending that women limit their breast-feeding to six months. Firstborn infants are at particular risk of chemical exposure through breast milk."

"Not only are babies and toddlers with high toxic levels of contaminants scoring lower on tests of mental, verbal, IQ, and physical development, chemicals are disrupting puberty.  "Today, half of all the girls in the United States start popping breasts by their tenth birthday," a statistic that is particularly  disturbing when paired with this one: "If you get your first period before age twelve, your risk of breast cancer is 50 percent higher than if you get it at age sixteen."

I guess like the canaries in the mine, womens' breasts are a window to an increasingly toxic world that calls for tighter regulations on food, chemicals, bottled water.  Maybe before banning formula samples we take another look at overall environmental, food and water health to learn who is feeding what to whom.

Take time now to read ORION Magazine's report on fracking, how the chemical companies can turn land into a toxic waste dump, convert kitchen faucet tap water into methane, and force families to take it on the chin in the name of natural gas for energy.

Over the weekend I was talking with a family member who was extolling our recent Mars accomplishment.  The idea, I was told, is to investigate that planet as the next Earth. 

I am curious to know how come we would spend all that time, money, ingenuity, effort, creativity, imagination, and intelligence to land a scooter on Mars when we could apply it to figuring out how to heal the wreckage we've caused on this planet and make it a sustainable place to live.  

Sometimes, I have no explanation.

What will we do when we can no longer suck a million gallons of water out of a river to open the gullet of each fracking station?

What will we do when lethal gases trapped a mile under the Earth's crust continue to leak into what used to be clean air?

What will we do when the natural gas runs out? 

What can we rape and pillage then?

 

 

Not All Organic Food Is Created Equal. Big Companies Are Co-opting A Good Thing.

When I became a beekeeper I took on the task of educating folks about raw, unfiltered, unheated, untreated honey and the high fructose corn syrup stuff masquerading as honey on the shelves of our markets.  Not all honey is created equal.

Nor, does it seem, is organic food.

Stephanie Strom reporting for the NYTimes in her detailed article "Organic Food Purists Worry About Big Companies' Influence" reveals that Big Food is exploiting what Americans are learning to choose: organic food over processed.  Excerpt.

Highlights:

1. "Organic food has become a wildly lucrative business for Big Food and a premium-price-means-premium-profit section of the grocery store
2. Bear Naked, Wholesome & Hearty, Kashi: all three and more actually belong to the cereals giant Kellogg. Naked Juice? That would be PepsiCo of Pepsi and Fritos fame. And behind the pastoral-sounding Walnut Acres, Health Valley and Spectrum Organics is none other than Hain Celestial, once affiliated with Heinz, the grand old name in ketchup.
3. Over the last decade, since federal organic standards have come to the fore, giant agri-food corporations like these and others — Coca-Cola, Cargill, ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft and M&M Mars among them — have gobbled up most of the nation’s organic food industry. Pure, locally produced ingredients from small family farms? Not so much anymore.
4. Many consumers may not realize the extent to which giant corporations have come to dominate organic food. Then again, giant corporations don’t exactly trumpet their role in the industry. Their financial motivation, however, is obvious. On Amazon.com, for instance, 12 six-ounce boxes of Kraft Organic Macaroni and Cheese sell for $25.32, while a dozen 7.25-ounce boxes of the company’s regular Macaroni and Cheese go for $19.64.
5. Between the time the Agriculture Department came up with its proposed regulations for the organic industry in 1997 and the time those rules became law in 2002, myriad small, independent organic companies — businesses like Cascadian Farm — were snapped up by corporate titans. Heinz and Hain together bought 19 organic brands.  Eden is one of the last remaining independent organic companies of any size, together with the Clif Bar & Company, Amy’s Kitchen, Lundberg Family Farms and a handful of others.
6. BIG FOOD has also assumed a powerful role in setting the standards for organic foods. Major corporations have come to dominate the board that sets these standards.As corporate membership on the board has increased, so, too, has the number of nonorganic materials approved for organic foods on what is called the National List. At first, the list was largely made up of things like baking soda, which is nonorganic but essential to making things like organic bread. Today, more than 250 nonorganic substances are on the list, up from 77 in 2002.
7. Cornucopia began taking a harder look at the history of the addition of carrageenan and other substances to the accepted organic list after a bruising battle last December over the addition of docosahexaenoic acid algae oil, or DHA, and arachidonic acid single cell oil, or ARA. Its research led to a paper titled “The Organic Watergate.” “After DHA got onto the list, we decided to go back and look at all of the ingredients on the list,” Mr. Kastel says. “The average consumer has no idea that all these additives are going into the organic products they’re buying.”
8. The Organic Foods Act calls for a board consisting of four farmers, three conservationists, three consumer representatives, a scientist, a retailer, a certification agent and two “handlers,” or representatives of companies that process organic food.  There are no farmers on the board.
9. Similarly, the three consumer seats have never been filled by anyone from a traditional consumer advocacy group like the Organic Consumers Association or the Consumers Union. Instead, those seats have largely gone to academics with agricultural expertise and to corporate executives. There are no independent consumers on the board.
10. Driscoll’s was the only company that allowed an employee serving on the board to talk to The New York Times. The rest — even Cropp, the 1,400-farmer cooperative that sells more than $700 million in products, many under the Organic Valley brand — had more senior executives do the talking. Organic Valley's board representative, Wendy Fulwider, has voted with the corporations,voted to keep carrageenan on the organic list, voted to let organic egg producers give their chickens just two square feet of living space, when Cropp requires its own farmers to provide five and, most controversially, she voted to add DHA and ARA (docosahexaenoic acid algae oil, or DHA, and arachidonic acid single cell oil, or ARA) to the list for use in baby formulas."

So, here's what you need to learn:

what are you eating,

what are you drinking,

where does it come from,

how do you know what's in it, and

for those folks living in food deserts who will educate and feed them?

I saw a bumper sticker on a semi: "Without trucks America stops."

What's worse: Without sustainable, organic, community-supported, local farms, America starves.

A Word Of Advice From A Farmer.

My friend George is a farmer.  He farms 27 acres of organic produce.  He is best known for the strawberries that come out of the field in February and the heirloom tomatoes that will be in our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) baskets in a few weeks.

George isn't much given to words of wisdom unless it involves soil, water, produce or some combination thereof.

Recently I made George my designated "farm consultant."  He is my "go to guy" for all farm, farming, farmer and livestock-related questions as I pursue a dream of owning my own farm.

Struggling with the disappointment of finding a property that turned to be less than what I was expecting, George told me to let it go and keep on looking because, "Dreams are for realizng, not compromising."

What's Really In That Plastic Bottle Of Bottled Water You're Drinking?

There's nothing odd about 3 corporations taking control of our drinking water.  It's just business.

Nestle, Coke and Pepsi have their eye on the future.  The future is water: who has it, who controls it, who needs it.

Mahatma Ghandi said, "There is enough water for human need, but not for human greed."

This is where we have arrived: corporate greed.

Yet, it's not all their fault.  Corporations sell what we buy.  When we stop buying we change things.

Water covers 75% of planet Earth; only 1% of that is drinkable.  In the next 15 years almost two-thirds of the human race will be struggling for clean drinking water.

Water is the new oil.

Now does it make sense?

Nestle, Coke and Pepsi are sucking the earth dry, bottling the water and selling it back to you at 1900 times the original cost to them.

What do you think goes into a bottle of Arrowhead, Ozark, Dasani or Aquafina water?  Pure mountain stream refreshment?

Over 40% of the bottled water on the shelves is merely good old-fashioned municipal tap water.

Recall a few years back when Atlanta was suffering the drought?  Lakes were down to dirt?  But the local Coke plant kept on bottling?

The joke's on us.

Compounding the problem is the petrochemicals that make up the plastic bottles that hold the water.  These cancer-causing petrochemicals leach out into the water you drink, you give your kids to drink.

And it doesn't stop there.  Not everyone gets curbside recycling service.  And even if we did there are not enough recycling plants or uses for the bottles.  So they end up in landfills where the petrochemicals leach into the soils and ground water.

And it doesn't end there.  Our oceans are becoming a toxic plastic stew as more and more bottles are swept into the lakes, rivers, streams and sea.  Marine life eats the broken down plastic pellets.

Environmental psychology researches the value of open space on humans.  Apparently, a stroll in the out-of-doors or just looking at green spaces helps reduce our stress level as well as supplying  much-needed time for exercise, solitude, contemplation, reflection, perspective, a break from the daily, noise-driven routine, and the like.

If you love music, New Orleans is the place to be! There’s music all over: people playing in the streets, on sidewalks and in the open-air cafes.

The best thing about the French Quarter is Royal and Chartres. Royal Street of course has great shops and all the fabulous art galleries. Check here for maps.

Stop at the Monteleone Hotel and have a drink at the Carousel Bar.  It's old, it's beautiful, and yes - it's a moving bar!

There's a great little restaurant on Orleans Avenue behind the cathedral - Orleans Grapevine - small, quaint, known for excellent wines.

Check out The Green Goddess. Something of a hole in the wall, but the food and the chef are SO worth it!!!

St. Louis Cathedral is a great stop for a beautiful church with pretty stained glass and even more history.   You may catch a wedding party spilling out into the square and second lining down Royal Street.

Frenchmen Street in the Marigny is New Orleans funky with lots of clubs for listening to music. Watch the clock for the Witching Hour!

Take the streetcar down St. Charles and get off at Lee's Circle.There's the Ogden Museum of Southern Art . A must see.

From there venture down Julia street and others in the Warehouse District  for Galleries and restaurants. 

For military buffs there is the National World War II Museum - a great and moving tribute to the service of the greatest generation.

Continue the streetcar down St. Charles through the Garden District  to Uptown and the University area. 

Stop at Carrollton Avenue and grab some breakfast or lunch at the Camellia Grill before spending some time shopping in the Riverbend area.

If you have access to a car go down Magazine Street for shopping and eating - where the locals go!

Suiting Up For The Next Generation.

Saturday last saw me all suited up and talking to upwards of 50 folks who came to The Ecology Center to learn about honey bees (Apis mellifera), pure local honey, and becoming a backyard beekeeper or "beek."

The adults posed many questions showing lots of interest and concern about the plight of honeybees (the canary in the mine of our world), Colony Collapse Disorder, how to distinguish real honey from the store bought fake stuff, and so on.  I felt like I was on "Stump the Beekeeper."

But the real excitement, equally insightful questions and "ah ha!" moments were shared by the young people.  There were eight year old farmer wannabes, ten year old girls taking pages of notes with pencil in spiral bound notebooks so they could prepare for a class report, six year old hands held in the air so long to ask a question that first one arm and then the next and then back to the other were raised.   The teenagers were so engaged they did not text during the hour - well, as far as I could see.

I passed around honeycomb taken from the wild when I rescued swarmed colonies, frames of built-out comb used to raise brood and store honey, frames of old comb where bees had died emerging from their cells, and showed off the beek basics I carry around in my beek box.  The young people were ecstatic when I displayed a photo of lavishly drawn designs painted with wild colors on stacks of hive boxes - no bland white boxes for these kids.  Everybody wanted to get into the act setting up a backyard hive.

Some days despite my Aquarian tendencies I can present a pretty cynical face about the future of the planet.  As I posed for the last cell phone picture and packed up my beek gear I knew that just as we "let bees be bees" the same applies to kids: give them some ideas, support and direction; then let them be as they find their way.  

I believe we are going to be just fine. 

Really, Now! Who Has Time To Write Poetry?

I am reading "The One-Straw Revolution" by Masanobu Fukuoka.  Michael Pollan calls this little book,

"One of the founding documents of the alternative food movement, and indispensable to anyone hoping to understand the future of food and agriculture."

Why would I read such a book? I want to feed people organic apples and the foods one can make with apples.  We can always use a good apple, grown right - and a nice slice of pie.

In one chapter Mr. Fukuoka reflects on how the times have changed.  Not just for farmers but for all of us. In the act of cleaning his village shrine he uncovered bit of haiku written by villagers time out of mind.  Then, he notes, even farmers had time to write poetry.  But no more - we are hurried.

This seems true for all of us.  Even for me when I catch myself (again) eating a meal in front of the computer screen instead of appreciating what I prepared perhaps sitting in the sun.

It can be different, even if only incrementally. We just need to step out of the cave:

You, Your Secrets & What Companies Learn About Them.

We think we know all about marketing, branding, advertising.

We say: "I buy just what I need or want, not what someone or something tells me to buy."

Would that it were so. As Ralph Nader says, "You get away from marketing when you are asleep."

When you are done talking to yourself, visit a fascinating and in-depth article by Charles Duhigg reporting for the NYTimes, "How Companies Learn Your Secrets."  It's so rich for mining I  don't know where to turn first.

Number 1: we are habit-driven creatures.  The habit works like this: cue + response + reward.  For example, it's Saturday night (cue) and on Saturday night I have fish and chips (response) because it's fun and greasy (reward).  And so it goes until something pretty drastic breaks the habit.  Drastic like a move, a divorce, a marriage or the like.

Raise your hands: who here uses the same dish washing detergent their mom used?  See.

Number 2: companies collect information on customers.  No news here.  But apparently Target is ahead of the game turning demographic collection into a data driven, statistics-based enterprise that makes the most of "the intersection of data and human behavior." 

Number 3: all the demographic information companies collect is meaningless (as we have learned in other areas of practice)

..."without someone to analyze and make sense of it. That’s where Andrew Pole and the dozens of other members of Target’s Guest Marketing Analytics department come in."

The article claims that Target has gone so far in its analysis as to know when a couple is pregnant so they can target (ahem!) the new parents and turn them into loyal customers for years. A Dark Art or admirable enterprise?  

Admittedly, the article will take almost as long to read as it takes to watch The Greatest Movie Ever Sold.  Yet, it sure is worth knowing a bit more about what they know about you so you can decide for yourself who or what is the
